The society beyond other activities which may be held in local chapters, is committed to the annual conferences held in institutioñ within Nigeria, with a department of music. The annual conferences feature the presentation of papers within a given theme, thereby providing a yearly platform for cross fertilization of ideas towards personal enrichment of individual music educators. Furthermore, the annual conferences provide opportunity for music educators to encounter nationally acclaimed music enthusiasts and promoters who have carved a niche for themselves in the field of music. Furtherstill, departments of music in the states do organize workshops, choral competitions and seasonal concerts from time to time.

Awards are also given to deserving Nigerians either in the academia or otherwise in recognition of their contributions to music or the promotion of the art in any recognizable capacity.
The society publishes the Journal of Music Education in Nigeria to enrich members, music scholars, the government and the Nigerian state.
